Here's to cooler days, football weekends, evening walks, and spending a little more time outdoors. Whether you're grabbing dinner at a local favorite or simply enjoying the neighborhood, we hope September brings plenty of reasons to slow down and savor the season!
National Night Out!
Tuesday, October 6
Come on out to Vickery Place’s Annual National Night Out Against Crime block party, Tuesday October 6th, 6:00pm – 9pm, in the 2600 block of Glencoe (between Miller & Willis Avenues)! Bring the whole family & Fido too (dogs on leashes, please). This is the perfect opportunity to build community spirit and promote a crime-free neighborhood!
There will be a great musical performance, food for sale from Pie Tap & Walker's, local artisans and vendors, children's activities (face painting, sidewalk chalk and balloon animals), as well as beer/wine, and NEW VPNA merchandise for sale! Admission is free, but be sure to bring cash or credit cards for our famous raffle and other items for purchase!

We Need Volunteers!
To make this year's National Night Out truly special, we need your help! We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can lend a hand in various ways to ensure the event runs smoothly and everyone has an unforgettable time.
Whether you have a few hours to spare or can commit to the entire event, your support is invaluable. Here are some ways you can get involved:
- Day of set up!
- Help stringing lights overhead on the block
- Setting up tables when they arrive
- Showing vendors where to set up
- Breaking down after the event
- Next Morning
- Taking down lights
- Ensuring all trash is cleaned up on the block
- Returning items back to storage

Showcase Your Business at this year's NNO! Donate, Sponsor, Be a Vendor!
We're seeking local businesses to donate gift cards to raffle off at the event. Additionally, we're inviting local small businesses to participate as vendors to sell their goods. Looking to sponsor something for the little ones? We have four spots available if you're interested in sponsoring a kid-friendly activity booth, such as face painting, balloon animals, or glow stick giveaways. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your business and engage with our wonderful community. 🎉 Make Your Block Party a VPNA Event!
Want to get to know your neighbors a little better? VPNA will provide up to $200 toward your block party! It’s a great way to bring your neighbors together, build community, and have a little fun right outside your front door.
Ideas for Your Block Party
Your event can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like! Some fun ideas include:
- 🍷 Front-yard get-together with small bites and wine to meet your neighbors
- 🎃 Halloween block party with the street blocked off, games, and a bounce house
- 🎄 Christmas caroling followed by a neighborhood hot chocolate gathering
- 🏈 Game-watch party with neighbors gathering to cheer on their favorite team
- 🌶️ Chili cook-off with everyone bringing their favorite recipe
- 🎉 Or come up with your own creative way to bring the block together!
A Few Ground Rules
- Up to $200 per block party is available for reimbursement from VPNA.
- Alcohol is not an eligible expense.
- Everyone on your block must be invited. You’re welcome to invite friends and neighbors from beyond your block as well, but every household on your block should receive an invitation.
- You are responsible for obtaining any permits that may be required for your event.
- Have fun and use the funds to create an opportunity for your neighbors to connect!

After your block party, simply submit your receipts and expenses for reimbursement to:

Lakewood Service League Chari-Tea
Investing in Education
Join the Lakewood Service League for the 2026 Chari-Tea fundraiser on October 21 at Lakewood Country Club, featuring Chef Darren McGrady, former chef to Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana. We'll have light bites and desserts, and tea, of course! We'll also have some great stuff in our auction.
This year, education is our focus, and we hope to raise enough to fund the following education-focused projects in our Dallas community:
- $15,000 for The Wilkinson Center to support GED education for 25 adults
- $15,000 for the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center to provide professional development for 10 therapists
- $10,000 for Jubilee Park to provide math and reading curriculum for 100 children
Your participation will help us turn these goals into reality while enjoying a wonderful afternoon with friends and neighbors.

Peace Pantry
Vickery Place Shows Up for East Dallas
Peace Pantries live inside our East Dallas schools and are 100% supported by the community. They provide food, snacks, toiletries, and everyday essentials to students, staff, and school families who need a little extra help.
On Thursday, September 10, from 12–6 PM, neighbors can drop off donations at the Comerica Bank parking lot on Mockingbird, next to Burger House.
The drive supports Peace Pantries at Geneva Heights, Oran Roberts, J.L. Long, Lipscomb, Mount Auburn, Mockingbird, and Woodrow Wilson.

Yard of the Month
A Fresh Start at 5207 Richard Ave.
Sometimes the best garden transformations begin with a plan. And sometimes… they begin with a landscaping disaster. For David Roges of 5207 Richard Ave., it was the latter. While David was out of the country, a construction crew inadvertently left his sprinkler system turned off. By the time he returned home, his beautiful backyard—and some beloved Japanese Maples—had been lost. It was a heartbreaking surprise, but David decided to make the best of a bad situation. Instead of simply replacing what had been lost, he saw an opportunity to completely rethink his landscape, ultimately redesigning both the front and back yards.
David has done the design and execution himself with some design and plant selection help from friends and Desi Lopez Landscaping, transforming the spaces from the ground up. The new front yard features hydrangea 'trees', salvia and pentas for seasonal color, while the backyard now includes a palm, pool and a beautiful pergola. For David, the process wasn’t simply about replacing plants—it was a chance to create a landscape that better reflected his love for entertaining and his green thumb evolution - and made the most of the property’s unique spaces.
Of course, a beautiful garden is only half the story. There’s also the ongoing dance of watering, pruning, planting, and keeping everything happy through the very particular seasons of North Texas! His favorite places to find plants, materials, or inspiration are Ruibals - and soon North Haven Gardens with his gift card! After putting so much of himself into the project, there’s something particularly satisfying about watching the new landscape take shape and mature.
David has called his Vickery Place home for over a decade and when asked what he loves most about living here, he says the community and the walkability to so many great places. We think that sense of personal investment is one of the things that makes Vickery Place so special: neighbors who care about their homes, their gardens, and the character of the neighborhood we all share. Congratulations to David on being our Yard of the Month—and on turning an unfortunate setback into something beautiful!

Volunteers Needed: Help Grow Solar Prep for Girls’ School Garden!
VPNA is teaming up with Solar Prep for Girls on Henderson Avenue to help bring hands-on nature and science learning to our local students. Whether you’re a master gardener or just enjoy digging in the dirt, there’s a place for you in this project. Volunteers are needed to brainstorm garden ideas, help plant and maintain beds, and share their knowledge and experiences with curious young minds. Getting kids outside and connected to the natural world builds a foundation for lifelong learning about science, sustainability, and where our food comes from — and it’s a wonderful way to invest in the future of our neighborhood.
No experience is necessary, and there’s no minimum commitment. Whether you have one hour to spare or want to be involved on an ongoing basis, every bit of help makes a difference. Come plant a few seeds, pull some weeds, or just chat with students about why pollinators matter — it all counts!

Pet of the Month
Meet Archie, named after the beloved comic book character, Archie is a 14-month-old mini/medium red Goldendoodle with plenty of personality.
Archie’s favorite thing, besides his humans, is his older brother, Jackson, whom he happily pounces on almost 24/7. He loves chasing toys, especially tennis balls, and the moment the leash comes out, he knows exactly what it means… a walk!
Archie loves strolling through the neighborhood, making friends with dogs and people along the way. He almost always finds a stick, large or small, to carry home. Sometimes his selection is so ambitious that it drags along the ground for the entire walk!
When he’s ready to relax, Archie loves nothing more than finding a lap to sit in, especially on the front porch, where he can settle in and watch the world go by.
Archie will receive a $50 Hollywood Feed gift card for being September’s Pet of the Month.
