PET OF THE MONTH

Meet February’s Pets of the Month: Bella & Bentley!

These adorable Yorkies have proudly called Vickery Place home since 2021. You’ll often spot them out and about on neighborhood strolls to Duro—usually in matching winter coats alongside their mom, Natalie. Fashion-forward Bella & Bentley love costumes and cozy rides in their stroller.

If you see Bella & Bentley around the neighborhood, be sure to say hi and congratulate them on winning February’s Pets of the month.

Big Shout Out to Barking Hounds Village for sponsoring this month with 2 complimentary day passes for doggie day care! Check them out for your pet vacay needs! https://www.bhvtexas.com/

YARD OF THE MONTH - 5323 Goodwin

Congratulations to Matt and Katy Roesner of 5323 Goodwin, our February 2026 Vickery Place Yard of the Month winners!

Matt and Katy moved to Dallas from Chicago and have completely transformed their yard in the five years since they arrived. Matt, who grew up farming in Kansas, clearly brought his generational green thumb with him. Our committee has appreciated their care and attention to their yard so much that this is their second nomination!

Their yard focuses on lower-level landscaping that enhances the visibility and charm of their home. The result is a beautifully layered garden designed to withstand the extremes of Texas weather— both hot and cold, something it has already proven capable of doing. Even their begonias, typically annuals in our growing/hardiness zone 8, have so far lasted through the many hard freezes we have endured in recent years.

Careful consideration of all their plants has paid off in so many ways. They picked fresh peppers for us from their habanero pepper plant and we could still see a few of their tomatoes, even in the cold last few days of December. Plants like peonies and hostas, transplanted from the Midwest, are carefully placed while over 50 planted daffodil and tulip bulbs get ready to sprout in just a few short weeks.

Their dedication goes well beyond aesthetics. They shared their top care tip for neighbors during a freeze – water those roots! Making sure the ground underneath is well-watered helps insulate roots from freezing and can extend the life of plants through cold weather.

We are grateful to our sponsor, North Haven Gardens, who award our winners a $50 gift card to continue their gardening pursuits. Congratulations to our February Yard of the Month winners, Matt and Katy!

BOOK CLUB

Monthly Book Club

The Vickery Place Book Club is a once-a-month group that meets on the 2nd Thursday of every month. We read fiction (so far) and books are selected during the meetings.

We nominate books and select the next two at each meeting.

We accept new members, so if you've never been there are always new people.

The hosting rotates through the group, but no one is required to host

City of Dallas Community Emergency Response Team Basic Training

The City of Dallas’ Emergency Management & Crisis Response department offers various courses to residents and visitors of the City, to help them better take care of themselves, their families and their communities.  All of this training is free and is supported by FEMA.

Their flagship course is the Community Emergency Response Team Basic training. This is a 20-hour hands-on course, taught over 3 consecutive weekends at the Dallas Fire-Rescue campus, that covers topics such as fire suppression, basic Disaster Medical, simple extraction processes and the like.  For folks that successfully complete the basic course, additional, more advanced training becomes available.

Additionally, they offer 1-hour Disaster Preparedness courses, which also deliver valuable information, but in much lesser detail than the full CERT Basic course.

The next full CERT course starts next Saturday, February 7th. More information is available on their website for the upcoming CERT Basic course at:
https://dallascityhall.com/departments/officeemergencymanagement/Pages/Community-Emergency-Response-Team.aspx

Many of the topics are quite timely given the recent winter storm! You can reach out with any questions you might have and what they are trying to accomplish by contacting Cassandra Wallace at 469-525-8778 or [email protected].
