Hello Neighbors,
August has arrived in Dallas, bringing the final stretch of summer with it! Whether you're squeezing in one last vacation, prepping for back-to-school routines, or simply soaking up the longer evenings, there's plenty happening in and around our neighborhood to keep the season vibrant. From community events and local markets to updates on neighborhood improvements, we’ve got the latest to help you stay connected and informed.
Stay cool, stay safe, and let’s make the most of these last sunny weeks!
State of the Neighborhood
A Message from the President
Dear Neighbors,
As your VPNA President, I would like to provide a current status update, address a few neighborhood concerns, and share a personal farewell as I step away from this role.
Curbside Trash Pickup Proposal
The City of Dallas is once again considering moving to curbside trash pickup. This change is being pursued to reduce labor costs, but it would negatively affect Vickery Place in several ways:
- Most homes lack a discreet space for storing bins in the front yard.
- Many residents do not have front driveways, making bin movement more difficult.
- Streets would need to be cleared of vehicles for several hours, causing significant inconvenience.
- Several streets are already designated "No Parking," making this logistically unworkable.
- Our narrow streets cannot safely accommodate two rows of bins and two-way traffic.
This contradicts what Councilman Paul Ridley shared with me in March, when he stated alley pickup would continue. I have contacted his office to voice our concerns but have yet to receive a response.
Residents are strongly encouraged to take action:
- Sign the petition
- Email your feedback directly to Councilman Ridley at [email protected]
This is a critical quality-of-life issue for our neighborhood, and your voice matters.
Sign the Petition to Voice your concerns about the city moving to front-curb trash pickup.

Dog Waste Stations – Hosts Needed
We have secured both funding and a vendor for pet waste stations, but we cannot move forward without homeowner participation.
We are seeking three volunteer hosts to install stations on their side yards, alley fences, or corners of their properties. The VPNA will cover weekly pickup and restocking. We simply need the physical space.
The ideal locations are slightly tucked away, preferably out of view from primary living spaces and on corner lots. If you or someone you know is willing to host a station, please email [email protected].
Unless we secure three locations, this project cannot proceed.
Overgrowth and Walkway Maintenance
The combination of heavy rain and summer vacations has resulted in several complaints about overgrown sidewalks, alleys, and yards.
Please remember:
- Sidewalks must have a minimum overhead clearance of 8 feet
- Streets and alleys must have 15 feet of clearance
Now is a great time to trim tree branches and overgrowth in line with your bulky trash week.

Double Your Impact with Employer Charitable Matching
Did you know that many employers offer charitable matching programs that can double the impact of your donations—including those made right here in Vickery Place? Whether you purchased Wine Walk tickets, gave to a neighborhood beautification effort, or supported another local initiative, your contribution may be eligible for a company match. It's a simple way to stretch your generosity even further, at no additional cost to you.
One of our neighbors recently activated her employer’s match on her Wine Walk ticket donation—turning one act of support into two. Thanks to her initiative, our neighborhood will benefit from additional funds that can be used for community improvements, events, and outreach. Her example is a great reminder of the powerful tools many of us have at our fingertips. If your employer offers a match program, we encourage you to take advantage of it—it’s a quick and impactful way to support Vickery Place.
Need help navigating your company’s match process? Reach out—your VPNA Board of Directors is happy to help!
A Final Word
I am resigning as President due to a relocation for work. Vickery Place has been my home since 2020. During that time, I have met exceptional neighbors, participated in memorable events, and worked hard to strengthen our association.
This organization only works when neighbors participate. Whether by attending events, serving on the board, or simply staying informed, your involvement matters.
Board elections are approaching:
- Nominations open in September
- Voting will occur in November
I urge anyone interested to get involved, the monthly time commitment is about 2 hours a month and few events outside of the monthly commitment.
Vickery Place is a historic, connected, and highly desirable neighborhood. However, it faces real threats:
- The Forward Dallas initiative aims to reduce single-family zoning
- Developers are reshaping the Henderson and Greenville corridors
- City departments are making impactful decisions without neighborhood input
- Local Bars and Restaurants are ignoring zoning laws and making life harder on some of our residents
Our strength lies in being informed, organized, and willing to act. Whether preserving our identity or opposing disruptive changes, it is critical that we continue to show up and speak out.
I am proud of what we have accomplished. We have streamlined operations, improved communication, reduced costs, and created new opportunities for connection.
Vickery Place will always be a special place to me, and I leave with confidence in this community’s ability to grow stronger together.
Sincerely,
Charles Mynard
2025 President, Vickery Place Neighborhood Association

Abigail’s Garden Elegance
Abigail’s “Vickery Cottage,” a 100-year-old Tudor-style home, is this month’s Yard of the Month—and it’s easy to see why. Her landscape is a masterclass in working with both sun and shade, blending formal structure with natural beauty. In the front yard, terraced hedges create a graceful frame for the home, while carefully selected shade-tolerant ground cover adds texture and softness beneath the canopy of mature trees. The entire space feels lush and intentional, proving that even low-light areas can be both practical and visually striking.
The thoughtful design continues around the front of the property, where Abigail removed a fixed wall and transformed the area into a xeriscaped highlight. River rock now flows through the space, adding visual interest and perfectly complementing her unique circle drive. This update not only enhances curb appeal but also reflects a smart, sustainable approach to landscaping in Texas’ ever-warming climate.
In the backyard, a glistening pool anchors a sunny, private oasis surrounded by vibrant, sun-loving trees and plants. Whether it’s the layered greenery in the front or the radiant energy of the rear garden, Abigail has designed a cohesive, well-planned landscape that enhances the character of her historic home while creating peaceful outdoor spaces to enjoy.
We want to congratulate Abigail, for her win and thank her for making Vickery Place even more beautiful.
We also want to thank North Haven Gardens for kindly sponsoring Vickery Place’s Yard of the Month program. Abigail has expressed her excitement about receiving a generous gift card from North Haven Gardens as it is a place she enjoys shopping with her mother.
As an aside, we were impressed with Abigail’s hard work to elevate her home in so many smart and impactful ways over the years, we wanted to show some stunning before and after images. Inspiring, yes?

Pet of the Month - Baxter
This month's VPNA Pet of the Month is Baxter!
Meet Baxter Kirkland; resident of Vickery Place for 15 years, his family 20. Many of you have returned this clever escape artist who has mastered the art of slipping through gates, squeezing under fences, and somehow materializing on the wrong side of supposedly secure barriers – all while maintaining an air of complete innocence. But don't let his Houdini-like tendencies fool you; Baxter takes his role as the family watchdog seriously, alerting us to delivery trucks, squirrels, and suspicious leaves that dare to enter his territory. His weaknesses? An undeniable obsession with treats and an insatiable need for cuddles. To celebrate Baxter, his family would like to invite you over for a Doggy Hour on Wednesday, August 13, from 4:30-6:30. Refreshments for humans and treats for our four-legged friends will be available. Please text RSVP to 214-477-7820. 5310 Vickery.

Do you know the difference between Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke?

As we dive deeper into the hot summer months, it's crucial to be aware of the risks associated with extreme heat and how to handle them. The image provided by the City of Dallas offers vital information on recognizing and responding to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, two serious heat-related conditions.
Heat Exhaustion
Symptoms:
- Fainting or dizziness
- Excessive sweating
- Cool, pale, clammy skin
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rapid, weak pulse
- Muscle cramps
What to Do:
- Move to a Cooler Place: Get to an air-conditioned environment or a shady spot to help lower your body temperature.
- Hydrate: Drink water if you are fully conscious. It's important to rehydrate to help your body cool down.
- Cool Down: Take a cool shower or use cold compresses to help bring your body temperature down.
Heat Stroke
Symptoms:
- Throbbing headache
- No sweating
- Body temperature above 103°F
- Red, hot, dry skin
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rapid, strong pulse
- Possible loss of consciousness
What to Do:
- Call 911 Immediately: Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Prompt action is crucial.
- Cool the Person Down: While waiting for emergency services, take immediate steps to cool the person. Move them to a cooler place, use cold compresses, and fan them to help reduce their body temperature.
Heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly, especially during the peak summer months. Recognizing the symptoms and knowing the proper steps to take can make a significant difference in outcomes. Stay vigilant, stay cool, and ensure you and your loved ones are safe from the dangers of extreme heat.

In 1935, Craft joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was appointed as State Organizer for Texas. In this position, she worked to raise money and organize new chapters. By 1958, Craft organized 182 branches of the NAACP across the state. In August of 1963, Mrs. Craft took 40 students via chartered bus to the March on Washington, and she helped students stage countless peaceful demonstrations designed to disrupt business at segregated institutions.
Craft died on August 6, 1985, the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act. Her home currently operates as the Juanita Craft Civil Rights House and Museum.
The event will honor the 40th memoriam of Ms. Craft, as well as the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, where we recognize the assurance of voting rights for all.
