TEXAS RANGER'S OPENING DAY GAME, APRIL 3!

PET OF THE MONTH

April’s Pet of the Month is Violet, a very proud Vickery Place resident. Violet’s owners have been in Vickery Place since 2013, and Violet joined in 2024. She is a one-year old Cavapoo who loves playing fetch in the backyard, carrying things in her mouth, (especially socks) and “sniffing for clues” on her walks. She is very friendly and would love for you to say hello when you see her on a walk, and she may even ask for a belly rub.
Our April Pet of the Month winner will receive a gift card to Pet Supplies Plus. We hope they use it for something fun!

YARD OF THE MONTH - April 2026

We’re delighted to spotlight the home of Mary, Laurie, and their adorable dog, Sophie, as Vickery Place’s April YOTM. Residents at the corner of Vickery and Laneri since 2008, the Sangers have created a truly special space. We recently had the privilege of touring the masterful landscaping surrounding the home and throughout the backyard, where we fell in love with Mary’s thoughtful design choices.
The yard features standout elements like a colorful smoke tree, several varieties of Japanese maples, giant crepe myrtles, creeping juniper ground cover, boulders, statuary, a water fountain, and a stunning silver sycamore that many neighbors also love. Each element adds texture, color, and visual interest while keeping the overall feel balanced, peaceful, and very Zen.
When building their house, the Sangers were careful to work with the lot’s existing trees rather than against them. The home, garage, and entry points were thoughtfully positioned on the property to protect the canopy and root systems of well-established trees. That care still influences the character of their property today. Mary continues to bring that same intentional approach to their landscaping, choosing plantings, colors, and accents that prioritize sustainability while understanding that a garden is an ever-changing evolving thing.
Mary and Laurie are active, engaged neighbors. They host a neighborhood mahjong group and book club meetings, attend VPNA’s annual National Night Out block party, and have even shared their home as a stop for the annual Wine Walk event.
Mary and Laurie originally chose Vickery Place because of its Conservation District status. Eighteen years later, they continue to love living here—the friends they’ve made, the neighborhood feel, and the incredible convenience of our location. Their home and yard reflect thoughtful design, sustainable practices, and above all, a genuine love for Vickery Place and its people.
Congratulations again to Mary and Laurie Sanger, our April Yard of the Month winners. And a very special thank you to North Haven Gardens for their continued sponsorship of Vickery Place’s beautification programs, including a generous donation of a $50 gift card to our Yard of the Month winners.

IT'S SPRINGTIME AND HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO KEEP THE MOSQUITOES AWAY!
Stop Mosquitoes at the Source Fogging Kills Everything ... Except Mosquitoes By Kerry Silver, Dallas County Master Gardener
Spring is upon us and gardeners are just itching to dig in dirt. But mosquitoes can really take a bite out of a pleasant day outdoors. Mosquito fogging may seem like an easy fix, but it only targets the adult mosquitoes already in your yard, not the larvae. Companies use buzzwords like green, biodegradable, natural or derived from flowers1 that may make customers feel comfortable applying pesticides to their landscape. But most residential mosquito sprays contain pyrethrins or pyrethroids, which are broad-spectrum insecticides2 that are also toxic to bees, butterflies and other pollinators, as well as fish and aquatic organisms. They can be harmful to pets and people, as well. A Safe, Effective Alternative There’s another solution that’s safe, affordable, and supports biodiversity. Best of all, it works! It’s called a mosquito bucket, and it targets mosquito breeding where it starts — without harming pollinators, pets, or people.
How To Make a Mosquito Bucket
Gather the supplies: · A large bucket · A handful of dead leaves or grass clippings · Mosquito dunks containing Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis4), which is a natural soil bacterium that kills mosquito larvae · Chicken wire or a sturdy stick Assemble your bucket: 1. Label your bucket. You can download a free printable label or buy a weatherproof vinyl sticker on Zazzle. 2. Drill a hole in the side of your bucket at the water line so it will drain rather than overflow from sprinklers or rainwater. 3. Fill the bucket two-thirds full of water. 4. Add a small handful of dead leaves or grass clippings to help make the water funky. Leaving it in the sun for a couple of days will speed up the decay process. 5. Leave plenty of water surface area, so mosquitoes have room to land and lay their eggs. 6. Add one-quarter of a mosquito dunk. 7. Cover with chicken wire and secure it with zip ties or a rock to prevent other creatures from climbing in. Or add a rescue stick that leans out above the rim in case a small animal falls in. 8. Place your bucket in a quiet, shady spot away from places your family or pets may be. Tips for success: · Add water periodically to keep it at two-thirds full.
Add one-quarter of a mosquito dunk each month. · Use multiple buckets if your yard is large. · Because Bti is not toxic to plants, insects, pets or humans, you can dump the water in your garden. Additional Mosquito Control Practices · Clear standing water in places like gutters, plant saucers, buckets, and the crooks of tree branches. · Spread cedar mulch under outdoor seating areas and refresh it regularly. · Keep patio fans running to keep mosquitoes away. · Use CDC-approved repellent like DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil5 to prevent bites · Wear light colored, loose fitting long sleeves and pants for gardening.
