🌷 Hello Neighbors!
Spring is in full bloom, and so is life in Vickery Place! This month, we're bringing you a roundup of local events, helpful neighborhood tips, and exciting news to keep you connected and informed.

🌼 May Homeowner Tips: Preparing for the Texas Heat
As we transition into the warmer months, it's essential to prepare your home and garden for the summer heat:
- Adjust Watering Schedules: With rising temperatures, ensure your trees and shrubs receive deep, infrequent watering to encourage deep root growth. Crate and Basket+6Moon Valley Nursery - Arizona Blog+6Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden+6
- Mulch Application: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around plants to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
- Irrigation Check: Inspect your irrigation system for leaks or clogs to ensure efficient water use.
- Lawn Care: Sharpen mower blades for a clean cut, and mow regularly to maintain healthy grass.
- Pest Monitoring: Keep an eye out for pests like aphids and caterpillars. Early detection can prevent infestations.
🏡 Neighborly Tips: Building a Stronger Community
- Community Engagement: Attend local events and support neighborhood initiatives to foster connections.
- Safety First: Ensure outdoor lighting is functional, keep porch lights on at night, and report any suspicious activities to local authorities.
- Pet Etiquette: Keep pets leashed during walks and clean up after them to maintain cleanliness.

May Pet of the Month - Moira

This month's VPNA Pet of the Month is Moira! She will receive a generous gift basket custom-curated just for her from our neighbor, Dr. Benjamin Wright & his team at Lakewood Vet Center.
"Meet Moira, our beloved COVID puppy who joined our family in April 2020—right after we panic-bought every plant at Home Depot. Named after the iconic Moira Rose from Schitt's Creek (though sadly lacking a wig collection), Moira is the queen of Richard Avenue, where she lives with her two doting dads. Her absolute favorite thing in the world is the B-A-L-L (yes, we have to spell it—say the word out loud and you'll witness an immediate explosion of joy and chaos). She brings endless love, laughter, and just the right amount of drama to our lives!"
If you see her around, be sure to wish Moira “congratulations” for being VPNA’s Pet of the Month for May 2025!

Nominate a Pet to win Pet of the Month below:
Please feel free to re-submit your pet if you did not win in 2024. Unfortunately, our backlog of pets to choose from did not survive the latest update to the form service we use. Please refrain from submitting if you've already won.
More about our Sponsor - Lakewood Vet Center
We are excited to introduce our VP neighbor and local veterinarian who will be sponsoring our Pet of the Month and contributing a monthly pet care tip for our neighborhood. Dr. Ben Wright has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 25 years with 18 years of that right here at Lakewood Veterinary Center. Dr. Wright’s vision for Lakewood Vet Center was to have a close-knit, personalized neighborhood practice where he knew his clients and their pets by name. We think he has reached this goal as he lives less than a mile from his practice and runs into a client or two every time he is out and about in our neighborhood.

May‘s Yard of the Month - 5323 Goodwin Ave
Congratulations to Matt and Katy Roesner of 5323 Goodwin Avenue, our May Yard of the Month winner! Since moving to Dallas from Chicago, the Roesners have brought a fresh burst of color and creativity to the neighborhood. Now empty nesters, they relocated to be closer to AT&T headquarters for Matt’s job, while Katy works as an oncology nurse at Baylor.
Their passion for gardening is clear from the moment you pass their home. They’ve completed a full yard makeover, focusing on lower-level landscaping to enhance the visibility and charm of their house—originally recognized on D Magazine’s 2010 list of the 10 Most Beautiful New Houses. The result is a lush, layered garden that’s both elegant and cheerful.
Their yard showcases a dynamic mix of perennials and annuals in a rainbow of hues. Holly bushes and other evergreens frame the space, while colorful blooms like petunias, irises, lilies, geraniums, and gladiolas bring seasonal vibrancy. Artemisia brings a silvery contrast that expands over the summer. Katy takes joy in selecting flowers and experimenting with new varieties, while Matt brings a designer’s eye to how the plants work together across the landscape.
Their dedication goes beyond aesthetics—they even managed to preserve their begonias through several hard freezes, a feat many gardeners would admire. And they’ve found clever tricks to encourage blooming: Katy and Matt swear by banana peels, which they strategically place to nourish their flowering bushes and produce spectacular blooms.
We love the beautiful transition the Roesners have brought to Vickery Place! They will receive a $50 gift card to North Haven Gardens to keep those flowers blooming!
