December 2022: 5330 Bonita Ave

Congratulations to Jane Slater at 5330 Bonita on being VPNA’s December (and 2022’s final) Yard of the Month winner!

When Jane began the search for a new place about a year ago, she dreamt of a “Little Blue Bungalow”. As soon as she saw the beautiful curb appeal of the corner lot at 5330 Bonita, she knew she’d found her new home. Jane fell in love with the unique yard shape and the giant agave, front and center. She affectionately refers to her dramatic succulent as “Spike” and has since learned a great deal about how to best care for her. For example, Jane shared that when pruning a large succulent, like Spike, to trim each frond all the way back to the trunk of the plant, to avoid rot. Good to know!

Jane and her adorable dogs, Birdie and Pepper, have spent most of 2022 settling into their new home and very much enjoy the energy of the location and the many friendly Vickery Place neighbors around them. Before we met her, we did not know Jane had set a personal goal to win VPNA Yard of the Month. So, imagine how impressed we were to learn that she had managed to capture our eye within her 1st year!

When asked where she looks for inspiration, Jane credited online images and you, her neighbors, and your beautiful yards. When learning her new yard; what was already in it and what else might work, she also used a mobile app called PlantIn.
