July Pet of the Month - Freddie

This month's VPNA Pet of the Month is Freddie! Freddie will be receiving free passes to Barking Hound Village from our neighbors, Lisa & Jeremy Jones, who have lived in Vickery Place for 16 years.
"Freddie is an Aussie whose tail wags the whole day long with his whole life focused on one special thing: a bright green tennis ball. Food? Just a distraction. The ball is everything to him! He spends his day in a whirlwind of fury motion, chasing his ball with the endless energy of a comet. His happy spirit lights up the entire yard. Freddie and his owners are unfortunately moving out of the Vickery Place Neighborhood soon. Freddie has a great group of friends who will miss him: Al Capone the French Bulldog, Kora the Aussie, little Stewie (nicknamed Stewpot), and many more. Even though he will miss his buddies, Freddie will be excited for the next adventure. New places, new friends, new games, and, of course, more balls to chase. Every day is a promise of excitement and fun for Freddie. Farewell, Freddie; you will be missed!"
If you see Freddie around the neighborhood, be sure to wish him farewell and congratulate him on winning July Pet of the Month!!

July Yard of the Month - 5242 Miller

Congratulations to Jane and Zane Butter at 5242 Miller Avenue, our July Yard of the Month winners!
Jane and Zane were drawn to this house when their realtor friend brought it to their attention in 2023. They loved it immediately and went to work making it their own, including painting the entire house, inside and out, a lovely white, the perfect backdrop for all the greenery in front of their home. One of Jane’s favorite plants is the caladium – you can probably tell that from a glance at their yard as they make such a beautiful and bold statement. Jane loves to stock up on caladiums at her favorite source, Caladium World. Over the last couple of years, she has planted hundreds of them, making sure to get them in the ground by Mother’s Day so that they can bloom by mid-June. She also has a soft spot in her heart for the set of stone lions that flank her sidewalk, as they welcome visitors and add a touch of whimsy and curb appeal.
The Butters are also big fans of the bald cypress tree and have planted about a dozen in their back yard to provide shade and privacy. If you can peel your eyes from the bounty of caladiums all along the front, make sure to notice the healthy hanging ferns on her lovely porch and you can’t miss the beautifully maintained oak tree that provides wonderful shade in our hot Texas summers.
We’d like to express our continued appreciation to North Haven Gardens for their support of our Yard of the Month program. Jane and Zane will receive a $50 NHG gift card to continue keeping their yard looking great. #northhavengardens

🏡 Cooling & Energy Efficiency
- Tune up your HVAC this July
July heat will push your AC to the limit. Have a pro inspect and service your A/C system now—replace filters monthly, seal any duct leaks—to keep it efficient under peak load - Boost insulation & window performance
Consider light-colored paint or roofing coatings that reflect heat, and seal windows/doors with caulking or weatherstripping to minimize heat gain - Add shading & ventilation
Install exterior awnings, ceiling fans, and roof/attic vents to reduce interior temperatures and take the strain off your cooling system.
🌱 Lawn & Landscape Care
- Water early in the morning—before 10 AM—to reduce evaporation and avoid fostering lawn fungus
- Keep grass height at 3–4 inches and never cut more than one-third per session
- Mow about every 5–7 days, or when previous lines disappear
